Manfrotto 055MF4 4-Section Tripod Overview

Retaining all the features of the 055MF3, the 055MF4 is a more compact tripod geared to the traveling photographer. The 055MF4 folds to just a shade over 21 yet extends to just under 5.5 . Light, simple, strong, and extremely versatile to position, the 055MF4 will comfortably support up to 15lbs and offers a minimum height of only 4.3 for low-angle shooting. Without compromising on stability or rigidity of the tripod, Manfrotto engineers reduced the weight of the 055MF4 by utilizing carbon fiber legs with quick action lever locks in magnesium and resin. In addition, they incorporated the patended design of the 3021PRO series top spider which offers four leg angle settings, and converts the center column into a lateral arm. The center column itself is of the latest generation of aluminum and resin materials. The low-angle adapter forms the top section of the center column and is easily detached by simply unscrewing the knob at the bottom of the column. This enables the head to be left mounted on the center column when switching between low-angle and normal shooting positions. All parts are assembled using a proven pressure clamp technology for greater durability and in-the-field serviceability. To make transportation even easier, the 190MF3 is supplied with a hand padded carrying strap that can also double as a hook to hang weight and increase stability during extreme wind conditions. Vanguard Alta Pro 264AT 26mm 4-Section Aluminum Alloy Tripod Legs, Maximum Height 61″, Supports 15.4 lbs. Review

This is a good tripod with nice features and a good solid feel, but lacks in a few areas.

I haven’t experienced the problems with the mounting hardware that other reviewers have experienced, and generally, the tripod feels very good. It has a few very nice features, such as a ball level, included tools, quickly adjustable spike-to-rubber feet for different conditions, and of course, the center shaft that allows you to angle and extend the tripod in all sorts of crazy ways.

I find a lot of tripod photography looks similar, because it is all from one angle – eyeball height. Having a tripod with legs that can splay out almost all the way to the sides, with a center shaft that can extend and rotate to the side means I can get lots of interesting angles, while still benefiting from the stability of a tripod. I currently have a Vanguard SBH-100 Ballhead mounted on it, and it is a good match in weight and size.

Pros:
Good price.
Extremely adjustable.
Sturdy feel.
Good quality included bag.

Cons:
Can get a bit unsteady with the center column extended all the way out. Careful with heavy cameras.
Method of tipping the column out requires you to almost, but not quite, pop the column out of the body of the tripod, which can be a little precarious – I recommend removing the camera BEFORE going into “tilt mode”. Once you are in tilt mode, however, it is held securely.
A little heavier than it’s more expensive counterparts.
