Flashpoint F-2 Magnesium Alloy Tripod Ball Head with Quick Release Plate, Supports 11 lbs. Review

I’m really pleased that I bought the Flashpoint F-2 Tripod Ball Head. The price was right and it has served wonderfully well with my Canon 100-400 zoom lens and a Flashpoint carbon-fiber monopod. I am making use of a different manufacturer’s quick release plate with the Flashpoint because it, in my opinion, gives me more stability of attachment with the 100-400 zoom. I’d recommend the Flashpoint F-2 head to anyone.

Manfrotto 460MG Magnesium Camera Head – Replaces 3437 Review

If you are using Manfrotto ball heads and are frustrated with the lack of control they offer then this affordable head will solve the problem. It’s exactly the opposite of a ball head because it offers control of each axis independently. That slows down the process but makes it more predictable and accurate. Unlike a basic ball head, if you need to rotate there is no need to loosen all the controls, just the one corresponding to rotation.

The unique thing about this model is that unlike other three way heads the control knobs are much smaller/compact which makes for much easier storage and transportation. On the negative side the controls need more force to tighten/loosen, but it isn’t anything beyond the ability of the average adult. Also, as you tighten and loosen the knobs your original settings might slightly change.

The RC2 quick release system with the included plate is awesome. When seated in the quick release socket the plate has a little play. Some might find that objectionable, but the plate is so compact that one quickly overlooks this weakness.

I find my self using this head for all of my portrait, landscape and commercial photography. Only product and architectural photography have made me reconsider this head in favor of the Manfrotto 410 gear head. That head however goes for double the cost of the 460MG. For those looking for value and convenience this head is best priced, offers very practical design, and super compact quick release plate.

Gitzo GH2780QR Series 2 Magnesium Center Ball Head QR (Gray) Review

I upgraded my tripod to a Gitzo series 2 carbon fiber tripod and wanted a reliable, lightweight, well-built ball head. I found it in this ballhead. I looked at the high end heads from Markins, Arca Swiss, RRS and although I was willing to spend more for them, I was not a fan of the Arca Swiss QR plate, which they all use–I was concerned that if not completely tight in the clamp, my expensive camera and lens could slide right out of the clamp. I wanted a secondary release for the QR plate and the way Gitzo has done this is very reassuring to me. The clamp loosens with a lever, then with a very quick press of a conveniently placed button the QR plate will slide out. Putting the plate in is very easy and secure. I was apprehensive about trying a newly designed product with very few reviews, but now that I have been able to use it, I am very happy with my decision. The head is very light, easy to operate, very secure when tightened, appears very well-made and durable. Best of all, it is a Gitzo–they are known for their top-notch equipment. It does look good on the Gitzo tripod and I did get it for about half what I would pay for the Arca Swiss (after rebate).

Benro A-157M8 Mg-Aluminium M8 Tripod Supports 13.2 lbs with Quick Release, 3-Leg Sections and Magnesium Die-Casting Review

Much has been covered by other comments so I won’t re-hash everything here.

While I like the Tripod I have no clue why the listing mentions ‘Quick Release’. The legs are screw locks, so that’s not quick.
I had hoped that perhaps the tripod top had some sort of mounting plate that could release but that’s not the case.

The Tripod arrived with the wide screw mount, which usually acts as an adapter to various ball heads – sold separatley (I have a manfrotto 3229 which fit nicely).

I don’t remember seeing any details in the small instruction manual that was in the box, so it wasn’t until I read a review here that I realized the entire screw and nut can be removed and flipped over. The other side has a smaller diameter screw that mounts directly to the camera (you’ll lose ability to ’tilt’ if you chose this option and forgo the ball head though. NOTE: I did not see it originally, but the case has a hidden pocket inside with a wench and allen key set as well as a manual.

The Tripod is well built and rigid. I do like the liquid level and small compass. The shaft height does affect the lower limit height with the legs spread out. It would have been nice to see that shaft come in two sections so that the head would have been self supported.
(Min height without ball head – 13in. & with my ball head it’s: 15 1/2 in). The manual says that you can remove the shaft and insert it bottom-up. This will allow you to get your camera very close to the ground while shooting but I’m not a big fan of using my camera in upside down mode.

All in all, this is a solid unit and well worth the price compared to others out there in the marketplace with similar specs.
