Monostat RS16SL Carbon ART, Anti-Rotation Tubing, 5 Section Carbon Fiber Monopod, Maximum Height 71″ Review

I wanted a lightweight monopod and took a chance on the Monostat – it was tall enough, under two pounds (it’s carbon fiber) and seemed beefy enough to hold my heavy cameras and lenses, but it was a brand I was unfamiliar with.
I have to say that I couldn’t be happier overall. The carbon fiber is light yet strong, and the workmanship is easily the equal of Gitzo or any of the pricier brands. I find it easy to setup, even in subzero temperatures where many aluminum legs tend to be reluctant to open. I do a lot of winter photography and I find I have no trouble getting the Monostat setup, even with heavy gloves on.
The articulating foot is a great idea and it helps to keep the monopod steady during panning and when moving the camera around. It also seems to give it a lot of “grip” on hard or icy surfaces. Only drawback is that I find it difficult to properly secure to my backpack with the foot in the way.
Mine came with case and strap, but I tend to lash it to my backpack rather than use the case.
I’ve used the Monostat with a Nikon D3 and 400 2.8 lens (quite a monster) and I find it rock steady and easy to navigate with. Even with this heavy setup, there’s no sign of flexing or wobble.
Note that it doesn’t come with any type of head…if you need one, you’ll want to buy it separately. You can just mount your camera directly on the monopod, but this makes it a bit challenging to move around, although it does keep the weight down. I use a spare ball head with a quick-release mechanism from another tripod I have…works great together.
Highly recommended.
