Velbon El Carmagne 630 Carbon Fiber Tripod with Pan Head and Case Review

Solid, steady, versatile, affordable. This is my first carbon fiber tripod. I got it with my first DSLR because I didn’t feel comfortable with the thought of the heavier camera setup on my aluminum tripod. The final selling point for me was the price. I couldn’t fit the Gitzo gear that all the pros raved about into my budget.
This price includes a head which makes the savings even greater. The head is heavy and a little sticky but solid as a rock. I know the pros recommend a ball head but the tri-plane is fine, though slower, and allows me to open up the horizontal plane and pan easily and shoot my 3 frames per second at a pack of passing cyclists.
The padded legs are nice for carrying it over the shoulder. The legs have a release that lets them splay out very wide to bring the camera close to the ground and shoot low angle macro or wide angle. The removable center post is essential to let the tripod get inches from the ground. The legs extend nicely and lock solidly; great for setup on uneven ground.
